Position Overview
We are seeking people who want to help with the design, building, testing, and implementation of a new IoT solution for an underserved commercial market. This position is for someone who likes to dive in and get things done. Get your hands dirty building a real-life product that will likely see around you in the world. This is not some obscure product that will never see the light of day. Every time you see it, you will say, “I was a part of building that!”
The position involves elements of electronic circuit design, power electronics, control systems, Internet communications, sensor systems, and web-based application control.
This is an intern position for current students. It is available for 20 hours max during the school year and 40 hours max during the summer. This internship may continue for up to one year.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will assist in the design, configuration, automation, and maintenance of a custom embedded system. This system will include design of:
- Firmware for the selected microcontroller.
- Interface circuitry to control external devices.
- Communications circuits for local control of up to hundreds of devices from a single microcontroller.
- Printed circuit boards for required circuit components.
- Power delivery circuits that convert 12VDC, 120VAC, and 240VAC power sources to conditioned power for the microcontroller and associated circuits.
- RESTful API for sending and receiving.
Qualifications:
The list below describes our ideal candidate. We realize we are looking for a unicorn with some of the previous experience requests. If you don’t have some of the specific experiences, but you are strong in other areas, apply anyway. If you are really serious about this position, you should include the word unicorn somewhere in your cover letter.
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Strong understanding of electronic circuit design, including power electronics
- Programming abilities of microcontroller firmware (Arduino compatible)
- Website design, especially with PHP and MySQL.
- Better than average understanding of networking and electronic communications.
- An understanding of common security concerns affecting IoT solutions and a desire to mitigate them.
- Familiarity with using AI tools.
- Strong communications skills in the English language. Ability to write complete documentation of your work and present your work verbally to your peers.
- You strongly believe (or at least are willing to accept) the axiom, “If it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen.”
- Ability to work both independently and in a remote, team-oriented environment.
- Not afraid to ask questions and admit when your knowledge or experience is lacking.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Must be authorized to work in the USA without sponsorship.
- Must have a suitable workspace, computer, and a reliable Internet connection.
How to Apply:
To be considered for this remote internship, please submit the following:
- Resume
- Cover letter detailing your interest in the position, a short description of an electronics project that you built outside of school, and your ability to work remotely. (This is a test of how well you read and follow instructions.)
If you are selected for an interview, please come to the interview prepared to discuss these questions:
- What concerns you most about IoT?
- What practices would you implement in your daily schedule to help you be more productive in a remote work environment?
