The HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) application period for our Fall 2026 internship session opens on Aug. 15 and closes on Sept. 15.
The program is open to undergraduate, graduate and professional school students of public health, health education, laboratory sciences, medicine, social work, environmental health, public administration, accounting, communications, computer science, law, nursing, the social sciences, and many other majors. HRTP offers dynamic internships in public health research, community health outreach and education, fieldwork, laboratory work and public health administration.
The application period for our Fall 2026 session is open from July 15 – August 15, 2026.
For consideration, applications must be submitted in full by the application deadline.
A complete application includes:
- An electronic application (applications only accepted through our online application at the link)
- A current cv/resume
- A personal statement
- A school transcript from your current institution (unofficial transcripts are accepted)
- One letter of recommendation and recommendation form

About HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program
HRTP: A Public Health Internship Program at the NYC Health Department is one of the oldest and largest public health traineeships in the country.
For over 60 years, HRTP has provided the opportunity for undergraduate, graduate and professional school students to experience some of the real-life challenges of public health. By working on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals, students apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum. In the process, they learn critical skills needed to excel in the field.
The goals of the program are:
- To orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, research, administration and evaluation.
- To broaden students’ concept of public health by increasing their awareness of the needs, challenges and career opportunities in this field.
- To assist the Health Department in recruiting skilled, professional candidates with proven potential.
