OVERVIEW
The Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (SNAMHS) Psychology Department is delighted to invite students from the Honors College at UNLV to apply for an undergraduate field internship for Summer 2026 and Fall 2026. This opportunity offers invaluable experience for students to work alongside psychologists in both the forensic and non-forensic (civil) programs. The SNAMHS psychology department consists of a group of licensed psychologists, psychological assistants, psychology interns, and graduate-level practicum students. We also host an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited training program for doctoral students. We work with patients with a wide range of mental health issues, including Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Substance Abuse disorders, Depression, Anxiety, etc. Our site also hosts training programs for other disciplines, including psychiatry, nursing, and social work.
INTERNSHIP ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
For this credit-bearing internship, our preference is to enroll undergraduate students in HON 395 for 3 credits (150 hours for the semester). This translates into the students being with us roughly 10 to 12 hours each week. Past students have scheduled approximately two six-hour blocks per week to meet this requirement. The scope of work could potentially include: participation in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, observation, research, literature reviews, shadowing individual/group therapy and testing, curriculum development, implementation of the token economy, trainings, committee meetings, etc. We will work to tailor the experience to the desires of the students as much as possible.
Required Skills and Education
Preference will be given to students in the process of developing a knowledge base in psychology, an understanding of scientific reasoning and problem solving, ethically and socially responsible behaviors for professional and personal settings, and competencies in written and oral professional communication skills, and who have professional goals that match what is offered by the internship. Interns must be current Honors College students with a GPA of 3.3 or higher.
HONORS COLLEGE INTERNSHIPS PROGRAM POLICIES
- For both paid and unpaid HON 395 internships, students apply for the position directly through the organization that is hosting the internship. If students secure a paid internship but also need to take a corresponding internship course that is for-credit, please contact the Program Coordinator to discuss viable options. No international internships.
- To be eligible for HON 395, active UNLV Honors College students must be at least 18 years old, at sophomore standing or higher (at least 30 credits earned), and hold a GPA of 3.3 or higher. To enroll, students must gain consent of the HC Internship Program Coordinator by following the 5-step application process outlined at: unlv.edu/honors/internships
