Job Description and Duties

If you’re passionate about protecting California’s natural resources and want to lead a team doing meaningful, field-heavy environmental work, this role offers a chance to make a real impact. You’ll guide a dedicated group of professionals working at the intersection of environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and interagency collaboration — all while helping safeguard some of the most ecologically important landscapes in Northern California.

In this position, you will lead a team within the Cannabis Enforcement Program (CEP) responsible for environmental compliance and enforcement across Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, and western Trinity counties. In this role, you’ll coordinate closely with partners from local and state agencies as well as Law Enforcement.

You’ll supervise and support staff conducting specialized environmental investigations at cannabis cultivation sites, often participating directly in the most complex and sensitive cases. You will also provide the first management level review of regulatory documents, Environmental Impact Assessments, and Notices of Violation.

Success in this position requires strong judgment, a solid understanding of environmental laws and ecological principles, and the ability to navigate sensitive public interactions with professionalism and clarity. The work you oversee directly protects public trust resources — and accuracy matters. Your leadership ensures that technical information is applied correctly and consistently, preventing significant impacts to both the public and the environment.

Personal Leave Program: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) hours. Please note that the salary ranges listed in this Job Control may not reflect these reductions associated with the 2025 Personal Leave Program.

Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

Use of a State-owned vehicle for travel is required to drive to meetings and field sites.
