UNLV Career Services and Workforce Development offers unlimited career coaching to UNLV students and alumni on a variety of topics along the job search continuum from exploring career options to landing a full-time position. View the types and formats of career coaching appointments below along with information on how to get started.  


Types of Coaching:

Career & Life Design coaching can help you explore your career decision making and/or transition process and any life stage. The life design process helps you clarify your career direction and navigate through the steps to progress toward your goals. Your career coach can help you:

  • Explore career interests, aptitudes and opportunities in the context of your life goals
  • Understand where you are now in relation to your future direction and how to create it
  • Identify how majors, minors or educational advancement fits in with occupational goals, career trends, and interests
  • Explore alternative career options and life goals for the transition to career
  • Develop a career action plan to build relevant skills and experiences 
  • Review Career Assessments and Life Design Exercises to illuminate your pathways
    • FOCUS2 is a 24/7, online, interactive, self-guided career and education planning system designed to help students make decisions about their future career goals and education plans. Access Code: unlv

Bring a draft resume and work with a career coach to optimize your resume format, content  and presentation related to jobs, internships or opportunities of interest.  The ultimate goal of a resume is to secure an interview.  Your career coach will:

  • Review your career and job search goals
  • Discuss your accomplishments, skills developed, valuable experiences related to job search goals
  • Provide guidance on resume format and organization
  • Assist with job descriptions that convey goals, key words, skills, and accomplishments   
  • Maximize your resume for ATS resume screening systems

Establish a LinkedIn account and meet with a career coach to create a strong LinkedIn profile designed to build your professional network and compliment your job search and career advancement. Your career coach will:

  • Assist you to craft a compelling “About” statement for your profile
  • Guide completion of critical LinkedIn profile categories
  • Discuss strategies for networking and job searching on LinkedIn

Bring a draft cover letter or letter of interest for your internship, job search or graduate school application. Your career coach will work with you to enhance your presentation, highlight your related skills and accomplishments and convey interest in the organization. Your career coach will:

  • Discuss your job search and career goals along with your target audience and job description
  • Identify resume and experience highlights most relevant to the job or opportunity
  • Assist you to articulate how your goals align with the organization where you are applying
  • Review cover letter organization, flow, grammar and points of persuasion
  • Assist with phrasing opening and closing statements

Interviewing is an art of communication that takes preparation and practice. Your career coach will help you formulate your approach to professional interview situations, build your confidence and better articulate your experiences, skills and accomplishments.

Option #1 – Stand Out Virtual Mock Interview

  • Practice answering interview questions with your virtual interviewer
  • Stand Out will record your interview and allow you to review your responses
  • Stand Out tracks your responses for flow, pauses, phrasing etc. 
  • Schedule a review with a career coach to discuss your Stand Out interview and enhance your future interview experience

Option #2 – Face to Face Mock Interview appointment

  • Schedule a face to face coaching appointment with a career coach to walk you through the interview process and typical questions
  • Review your responses to questions and discuss ways to improve body language, flow and expression
  • Improve how you articulate your relevant skills and experiences
  • Learn how to approach difficult questions or challenging interview formats

Book an appointment for assistance with your job search process,  Your career coach will assist you to enhance:

  • Understanding and utilization of key job search tools – Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, etc.
  • Building your professional networks, establish mentors, tap the hidden job market
  • Identifying strategies for breaking into competitive markets
  • Exploring your geographic considerations
  • Getting unstuck and maintaining wellbeing through the job search
  • Identifying community resources 

How to Access Career Coaching:

  • Every Tuesday and Wednesday – 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m
  • UNLV Gateway Building – Suite 200 Welcome Center
  • No appointment necessary
  • 15 minute sessions for resume optimization, cover letter review, general career resource questions or review of class assignments
